Sloth Isn't Laziness
It can express itself in that manner, and it runs much deeper:
In his Summa Theologica, Saint Thomas Aquinas defined sloth as "sorrow about spiritual good".
Personally, I find it quite unimaginable that some beings become irritated, agitated, or even angry about the flowering of spiritual good in the world; and therefore block, sabotage, undermine, or interfere with that flowering in countless overt, covert, malicious and malevolent ways.
How do we protect ourselves, families, and communities from such toxic energies? Developing a sense of self-discipline in service to intrinsic beneficial motivation can forge a powerful foundation.
